Labradorsophy is a unique project, dreamed about and developed by me, Sophy, and supported by my family. It has unfolded out of our love, passion and dedication to Labrador Retrievers. Labradorsophy started as an ongoing rescue mission in Portugal, as people had been seeing us out and about with our own Labradors - we had 4 at the time - and we began to get requests for help whenever a Lab needed to be re-homed, or somehow needed support. It turned out there was an enormous need for help! Many Labs suffer tremendous emotional as well as physical neglect and we wanted to help them get a better life. Sometimes they will need special medical support that they are not getting. Sometimes they have just been left all their life alone in a tiny kennel and are literally craving love. Sometimes Mama Labs are found with their breasts hanging nearly on the floor due to the abuse they have had to endure by being forced to have one litter after another every single time they have gone into heat! Sometimes they are simply abandoned on the streets, even those with pedigrees!
With a huge passion for dogs, and in particular Labradors, we started rescuing these poor souls. In order to help fund these rescues, we began to ask for donations when our pedigree Labradors worked as therapy and emotional support dogs in schools, nurseries and old people’s homes. That has been an enormous help and we thank every single family, school and social institution from the bottom of our hearts for their contribution to this project.
However, our Labrador family has been increasing ever since and, as a consequence of our work, more and more Labs have been crossing our path with an ever-increasing and overwhelming number of requests, making it an impossible task to manage alone.
This is when LABRADORSOPHY came to life (Labrador-sophy, ie. Labrador knowledge). I wanted to create a special and international space of passionate Lab lovers, to provide them with the best possible chance of living a healthy, loving and joyful life, with dignity, regardless of their background, age and state of health.
